That's a genius idea. Is there a way like that to catch opossums? We've had a few getting into the garage where they're ripping open our trash and spreading it all over the cars. We've had cats and dogs in the garage but it doesn't seem to help much. The cats don't really scare opossums and the dogs are a little freaked out by them too.
we had a opossum digging around the outer edge of our chicken coop every night for about 2 weeks and we set traps and couldnt catch it then one night my husband and my dog were in the backyard working late and the opposum showed up...my dog went crazy and got the opposum cornered until my husband could get "reinforcements" and...well...that was that. Once all was said and done it ended up the thing had 8-9 babies attached to it that were "dismissed" as well...if my dog wouldnt have spotted the thing and cornered it we would have had those extra 8 babies stalking our chickens as well!
SO I sure sure dont know what to tell you for setting opposum traps. One of our friends is an expert trapper and he set crazy traps in our yard and we still couldnt catch the thing! Its SMART...or just really dumb. I wonder if you set up a trashcan (instead of the 5 gallon bucket) with the same method as she described above for the "5 gallon bucket of death" if you could catch it?? Hey if you know they are going in your garage then Id give it a try! Just make sure the thing is really dead and not just playing dead before you reach in there and grab it!

Its been 1 month since I first posted this question and I started letting the chickens have more access to the compost and I have not seen a mouse since!! I havent seen them taking down any mice, but Im assuming that is what is taking place since all the mice have disappeared.
Thank you all for your advice!

My chickens even found and ate a small snake the other day. It was very interesting to watch because they all came over and were looking at it and examining it and then all the sudden one of the chickens picked it up and then it was a race! All the chickens took off after her!! Im not sure who got it in the end, but it was so cute to watch all 8 of our chickens having a circle race through our yard :)

Live traps work well for possums. Bait it with sweet horse feed. They love that molasses smell, or wild persimmon if they grow in your area.
