So, since the last time I took an American History and Civics courses was back when mullets were still fashionable hairstyles, I have no business writing my CongressCritter?

If a non-state actor does something immoral (nevermind legality, this is ethics here) which personally affects me in a significant way, you're darn tootin' I am going to have some very serious questions that I expect to get answered. That's why I said it's up to YOU to police your own folk and make sure they do right by society--because the questions go from "why didn't your staff microbiologist know how to use a biosafety cabinet properly" to "why don't we hang pharmaceutical scientists up by their toenails" right quickly. You know it ain't the CEOs who are going to get strung up, they bugger off to a sunny beach with no extradition treaties as soon as there's a whiff of real trouble.

Of late, ag companies like Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, etc. have been airing opinions such as yours, that anyone who reckons recombinant food is a shortsighted notion is just some know-nothing fool who can't see sense and knows jack about Real Agriculture. Once in a great while they run up against those of us who make recombinant biotherapeutics or biofuels and happen to know quite a lot about farming, thanks. It seems to flummox 'em and the only thing they can do is shout the same again, louder. As a scientist, I find it very unfortunate that some of my fellow biologists don't seem able to do fairly simple math or understand ecology, evolution and gene transfer, but if folks feel better when they shout I guess they can go on. I do remember teaching undergrad soil microbiology and nitrogen cycles to some of these shouty people, and I seem to recall that they got a lot of Gentleman's Cs. So you'll understand when I don't take their assertions too seriously, OK?

I cannot state this strong enough. For those who are interested in real life experiences, please listen to this AUDIO.

http://www.democracynow.org/2002/9/4/as_colin_powell_is_heckled_at

I am no rocket scientist but if I can manage listening to audio files on my computer so can you.

Here is a 71-one-year-old Canadian farmer testifying at a World Forum in Johannesburg South Africa about how Monsanto sued him and how he has lost his ability to farm. He has fifty years of farming experience and saving seed and now Monsanto will NOT let him farm. I listened to it in 2002 and now I have listened to it twice again. It still makes me cry.

Percy Schmeiser, Canadian farmer. He has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and was the Mayor of the Town of Bruno from 1966-1983.

It's interesting to me what conclusions some of you jump to.

1)
understand enough about the industry regulations, trends and jargon to be able to ask reasonable questions
My response was
If you can't ask a reasonable question, then you have no business commenting on it at all
Where did I say or imply that any question asked was unreasonable? Look up my posts, quote me. I beleive ALL people can ask reasonable questions, some may just start at a lower level of understanding--like when I talk to my mechanic.

2)
Surely we all draw our information from many sources
All I read from some of you are quotes from people being paid to write negative articles on Ag. Again, it was stated that a poster would like to talk to a farmer to get their side. I encouraged that & then 2 posters told that poster that they didn't need to because a)sited articles b)implications that they could not ask reasonable questions.

3) I'm aware several countries do not allow GMO products in. I support that. I wish traited corn would disappear for very few of the reasons some of you espouse.

4) I would support any consumer being able to buy whatever they want--as long as they pay the bill & product is legal. I don't support consumers telling the merchant he can't sell legal products because they don't like them so therefore no one else should be able to buy them or that the producer has to use a much more labor/cost method and charge like slave labor countries do.

5) Initial argument was "is giving non-GMO corn/vegetable seeds a good thing" not "is M a good company". 2 different questions.

6)
So far we had managed to conduct the discussion without descending to that
Interesting thought. Is being called stupid an insult? If you believe it is, try reading posts again.

7)
You don't get to choose who answers a post and their thoughts or questions
Where did I try to censore anyone? When have I called anyone a name or even implied it that posted here?

Seed, if you were trying to state a fact (or general comment) about something more in depth in their whole post you need to restate the comment better to point to something specific. PERIOD. Everyone is assuming you made that comment about their entire POST as a whole. For someone who is not happy with others OVER READING your simple comments earlier, then you need to watch your simple comments. It came across as they had no right to post here.

It would be better you reorganize your thought, or comment so it doesn't sound offensive, apologize for the mistake and move on. Trying to make EVERYONE here sound dumb because you did not come across as you intended does not help your case, or make it so your comment sounds any better.

I'm glad this only applies to people who dare to question what some of you think--do you want me to go back and start quoting some offensive remarks about me (I've chosen to ignore them rather than name call back) on this thread alone?. You know what was stated and the intent.

Again the question was "is giving non-GMO corn/vegetables to Haiti a good thing". As long as Haitian government/people say yes, I stand by it is good. If they chose to say NO, then I stand by it was good to offer but don't give it to them. They chose.

Last comment on this...

You can agree or disagree with whomever you chose. Fine! I dislike your point of view to the depths of my being. But I never commented you had no business posting here. There are forum rules that come first. If things said come across poorly to more then one person there is obviously an issue. This had nothing to do with a view point just a statement. And no one ever called you a name... but you choose to believe what you will.

Please be advised that this is an opinion piece based on unfolding history and the ensuing facts. :frow

OH, yes.....if it is not on TV....it must not exist....at least for the American people. This is the information that the rest of the world knows and sees everyday.

Thanks Lady, that points out one of my serious pet peeves with Media... we in the US are cut off from the whole global story so often. I think the way our media works is TOO close to North Korea's way of sharing world stories (All about us, and screw everything else that is happening... because according to them... its NOT!)

It just keeps getting better....
"n a Tuesday afternoon press release, the FDA announced that Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto executive, had joined the agency as "senior advisor to the commissioner." If the title is vague, the portfolio (pasted from the press release) is substantial--a kind of food czar of the Food and Drug Administration:

Assess current food program challenges and opportunities
Identify capacity needs and regulatory priorities
Develop plans for allocating fiscal year 2010 resources
Develop the FDA's budget request for fiscal year 2011
Plan implementation of new food safety legislation"
