Ok, this is HUGE to me. This picture if from a few days ago, but its already gotten bigger and not showing signs of being done.

It was also from a volunteer vine I didn't even plant! My daughter is so thrilled.... she insists I keep it in the garden until the fair comes in October so I can enter it. Would it possibly keep growing that long to enter? If you don't think so, please say something, I want to eat this thing so badly!!!

P.s. - Mary, this is one of those Orange watermelon's you sent me seeds for a couple years ago! Those things are for real monsters and delicious!!!

SAVE THE SEEDS!!!!!

Enjoy it but Vfem you gotta save those seeds and see what you can do next year. That may also help keep your daughter happy about eating this one.

That is the best homegrown watermelon I have ever seen, the fact that it is a volunteer makes it even better!

As far as growing it out until October I think you may run the risk of it being over ripe and not good eating. Our best one was over ripe by the time we picked it, from what I have read in the past it can be somewhat difficult to tel exactly when to harvest.

Good Luck!:thumbsup

It's hard to tell when you are buying one, too! This week I have finally gotten a good ripe watermelon from the grocery, after 3 duds. I have learned to let the cantaloupe sit out on the counter for a day or two, if it doesn't smell ripe yet.

Figuring when to harvest is the hardest thing!! Once you cut into it- there is no going back! I usually figure if the circle on the bottom (where it touches the ground) isn't white- it is not ready.
