Two things that might help if you are stuck having to get them out a bit early like this:

-- warm the soil first with clear plastic (on the whole area of soil, not little cloches which will make virtually no lasting difference, being a tiny dot surrounded and underlain by vast tracts of still-cold soil);

-- and use cardboard boxes to cover them at night, rather than cloches. (To avoid them starting to overheat *at all* in the a.m., and better protect them at night.) Put a brick on each box so it doesn't blow away, and drape a sheet or whatever over it if cold is scheduled.

Good luck,

Pat

I planted mine the same day as my last post without letting them harden off and now they are DEAD. So I will be getting up bright and early tomorrow to go to Lowe's and buy some more so I can get them planted before the sun gets to hot.

Boy did I learn something for next year or what?

i have all my started seeds in a little greenhouse out on our back porch, it gets direct sun all day long and heats up... stays warm overnight, then gets heated up again the next day in the sun. the only time i have brought them in was last night when the weather went down to 0.

i thought for sure my peas would sprout first...but one of my beans did! very strange

Hi inchworm :happy_flower

You say you have chickens -- they can help, indirectly !!! :D
Go dig a deep pit for every plant you want to plant (or a long deep trench) put a thick layer of newish poo plus some grass cuttins and/or vegetable waste (some urine would help too)! :ep Then shovel back the earth you dug out & make a hill to place your plant on with straw surrounding it as a much. The new poo etc will then heat up & provide warmth for the plant. You will need at least 9" of earth on top of the poo/veg-waste/grass mixture.
I would then stick in some stakes in a square round it & peg floating fleece round & over the stakes, making a protective box. This you can leave on until the weather is really warm as the rain & sun can permeate the fabric. This works well for me but I do warm my soil with clear plastic ahead of time :ya but I am in the UK & we don't have months of freezing weather. This year was unusual in that it was below freezing for 6weeks. :barnie :th :barnie

I hope this helps -- GOOD LUCK :thumbsup HAPPY GARDENING THIS WEEKEND to EVERYONE :coolsun :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow :coolsun
