Does anyone know what this is and how to stop it. It's probably too late to save this years crop, but I would like to be able to save next years crop.

That's good old powdery mildew. You could spray and that helps a bit. Mine start doing that towards the end of the season. I just let it be until my harvest is over and then I just pull the vine out.

@freedhardwoods, are there pumpkins on the vines? Maybe they will go ahead and finish up.
Do you think it would help to remove the diseased leaves, and maybe provide some shade so the pumpkins (if any) don't get sunburned?

Thanks much for the info. I've been really busy lately. I read your answer and was able to spray the plants, but forgot to get back here and reply.
These are mini pumpkins. There are lots of pumpkins and lots more blooms. Maybe I caught it in time so the blooms will produce more pumpkins.

Well, I watched the plants for a while and there were 100's of blooms, but no new pumpkins. Then, a week ago I found this. Orange pumpkins before spraying and yellow after.
The mildew pretty much done them in, though. Just a very few new pumpkins.

Reminds me of the performance of my Blacktail Mountain watermelon a few years ago.
Freedhardwoods, you need to know that if I climb up the hill on the same few acres as my big veggie garden, I can see Blacktail Mountain through the trees. It's supposedly the place of origin for that watermelon. The fruit on my vines didn't grow any larger than your pumpkins in the last photo ...
You should also know that a few years before that fail, I planted Blacktail Mountain seeds. They didn't even come up!!! Ya win some, ya lose some.
