the big garden bombed miserably this year. Bugs, intense heat and a period of no water ( the week we went away).

I fought back and started a square foot garden .

I had planted about 8 okra, 6 peppers, 6 tomatoes , 1 eggplant and 1 summer squash. A few bean seeds. Peas. Plus a square of Basil, Mint and Cillantro.

I just pulled out ( non fruiting) Peppers, 2 Tomatoes, chewed off at the surface pea seeds, beans are MIA...

the eggplant looks like its becoming diseased ( no fruits, just flowers) yellowing leaves ect. I may pull it tomorrow. It's flowers are really pretty tho!

I have a few tiny tomatoes forming on some plants. I pulled the Okra because we're sick of it. I tilled, weeded and re-planted. I'm waiting on several heads of cabbage, broccoli , cauliflower , a few rows of carrots and beets and I'm buildig another bed for the lettuce.

I'll have to update later from home but this is what it looked like when I first planted. . . on July 20th. I'm not worried about the lack of growth since i restarted from seed. I did cheat a bit and plant my tomatoes in mid june for a fall crop but my tomatoes are a good 2' tall right now and it's only been about a month in the soil!

Hey, at the very least you are ready for next gardening season!! Starting seeds inside is no easy feat. I think everybody has a few failure stories on that one!! I had much better luck with cold frames outside. Though I did have success on year 3, at trying tomatoes inside...Looks like you have a lot of great space there- I predict great harvests in the coming years!!

I lost about 1/3 of everything I planted too. The intense heat done in a lot of what I was trying to get in late. I know the feeling. Good thing fall planting is right around the corner huh?!

I'm really excited at the prospect of the SFG.... I may just line my walkway with a few beds and use the smaller of the two 'big' beds for potatoes and other root crops for now.

i'd think so...

im in Georgia and my garden is actually pretty nice soil. it is in an area that we had been clearing over the last two years so basically we dropped small trees on the land ( where the prior owner dumped his grass and leaf collections) and the termites ate the trees and then we did a big burn. So the soil looked like this :

but my boxes are mel's mix...

yes, for the SFG I used a modified Mel's mix... its mushroom compost, peat moss, black kow, jungle potting mix and our own compost.
