I bought a gardenia about 7 years ago from a box store. Original price was $75 and they were clearancing it at $16, so I was game. I paid for it at the self serve register, mostly with small change.
I grew great during the summer, but I couldn't keep it alive inside.
On Mid American Gardener one of the panelists said that she and others have tried unsuccessfully to keep them as houseplants/garden "summer campers", too, so I'm in good company.
I Should have harvested the petals and dried them out.
The aroma is breathtaking.
