I thought I remembered seeing a similar seedling, and now remember. What you have looks like the flower "4 O'clock", Mirabilis jalapa.
Four O'clock

I think you're right! Did a search and found seedling images that appear identical to what I have!
Thank you!

Just a suggestion, regarding your apple seedlings. Apple seedlings take quite a few years to begin bearing (5-10) which could represent a major investment in time (and space) if all you end up reaping is disappointment.

There is a possible alternative. You could vastly shorten that timeline, and increase the number of seedlings being tested, through the use of grafting. Buy a discounted apple tree late in the season, when they are marked down. Variety doesn't really matter for this purpose (unless you want to guarantee at least a few good apples during your experiment ;)) This provides a more mature tree to graft onto, as well as the hardy root stock attached to it. The rootstock is important, because it not only increases hardiness, it also dwarfs the tree size (undwarfed seedlings would most likely grow to a tall, unmanageable tree). Give that tree a year to establish itself, and for your seedlings to grow larger.

Provided the tree is healthy enough, you could begin grafting one or two cuttings from some of your seedlings the second year. If those grafts take, they will fruit much sooner than if the seedlings were allowed to grow on their own. This experiment would only require the space taken up by one tree, and you could potentially test the fruit from large numbers of seedlings in a (relatively) short period of time. If you don't like the apples produced off of a graft, just cut it off... if you like it, allow it to grow. Such a project could build skill in grafting, and become a long, enjoyable experiment.

And if you tire of the experiment, just cut off all of the grafts & allow the original tree to grow & fruit. :)

Thanks, my seedlings are doing fine. The reason I planted them was just for the fun of it as when I ate an apple some seeds were sprouting.

The confusion was when I planted the first one, by inserting only one seed in a fresh pot of "miracle mix potting soil" something else grew rapidly at the same exact location. Turns out to be a Mirabilis jalapa. 4 o'clock. Hence the original subject line "mystery plant". (See next post)

The "mystery plant", turns out is most likely a Mirabilis jalapa. 4 o'clock. Thanks Zeedman for pointing this out.
Unbeknownst it was in the soil and started to grow without my intentions. The Appleseed came later to fruition and I re-planted it and it's doing well.
