Attractive To Bees
Well, it took a long time, but I've finally opened up all the pumpkins. I have to say, I'm delighted with the quality of the seed -- they're more like the small, plump pepitas you buy in the store than anything I've ever harvested from a Styrian.
I'm afraid that none of the flowers I hand-pollinated took. I did it in a hurry, then left on a business trip, and when I got back they'd all aborted with not enough time left in the growing season to try again. Add to that the fact that this is the first time I've ever tried to hand-pollinate cucurbits. So I'm really sorry @Zeedman that my participation this year can only be a seed trial rather than part of the effort to stabilise the line. I do, however, still have a bunch of seeds for next year.
Now some observations!
Lot 2021-02
Unfortunately these two didn't have enough water, or rich enough soil (new garden plot), or something, so they only produced a couple miserable fruit.
All in all we harvested 2.6 kg of seeds, which is great! It seems that lot 2021-04 is both the most stable (with a sample size of 2 plants at least) and the closest to the breeding target. All pumpkins turned a beautiful orange -- I planted the seeds on 5 June and harvested on 10 October.

Lot 2021-02
- Plant 1
- Rangy vines, ~5m, two or three branches
- Four big, tallish fruits, all at least 40cm lat × 40cm long -- most closer to 50×50cm. Weight 800 to 1600 grams.
- Hard shells, > 2.5 cm thick. A lot of empty space inside, not much strings. Strings difficult to remove from seeds.
- 280g seeds, ~70g per fruit. Seed : flesh ratio 1:17
- These pumpkins and their seeds were most similar to the standard Styrian that I used to grow. A lot of variation within the same plant, mostly plump seeds, some large flat Styrian-esque ones.
- Plant 2
- Rangy vines, see above
- Eight spherical fruits, ranging from 37cm lat × 36cm to 50×4cm. Weight 625 to 1300 grams.
- Hard shells, ~2cm thick. Moderate empty space, not much strings.
- 740g seeds, ~90g per fruit. Seed : flesh ratio 1:10
- Plump, fat seeds, more similar to lot 2021-04 below. Hard to open, but not nearly as hard as plant 1 above.
- Plant 1
- More compact vines, though not what I would consider bush. Maybe about 4m?
- 12 short, squat fruits, ranging from 37cm lat × 32cm long to 44×36cm. Weight average 600g.
- Soft, thin shells, < 1.5cm thick. Very full of seeds and strings. And juicy, which I don't expect from a pumpkin. Easy to remove seeds, though they tended to hide in the strings! My wife says these were the easiest to process.
- 1100g seeds, ~90g per fruit. Seed : flesh ratio 1:5.5
- Plump, fat seeds. Perfect grocery store pepitas!
- Plant 2
- Vines and fruits similar to plant 2
- 6 fruits, avg 500g.
- I did find one fruit whose seeds were starting to open up.
- 480g seeds, ~80g per fruit. Seed : flesh ratio 1:5.25!!!!!!!
