I am adding a Mr. Stripey (the big Bonnie version) to my heirloom list, as of today. . . .
You made me go back and look, Whitewater. I need to add Mr. Stripey or rather Tigerella to my heirloom tomato list.

You probably have the American Mr. Stripey. I bought "Mr. Stripey" from a Canadian source. Their and the British "Mr. Stripey" is what Americans call Tigerella.

Anyway, I overlooked it in the flats so didn't list it and these names keep coming up and I finally broke thru the fog . . . okay, I'll stop now.

Pruden's Purple
Black Krim
Cherokee Purple
Tigerella
German Orange Strawberry
Anna Russian
Yellow Pear
Aunt Ruby's Green
Big Rainbow

Most of the heirloom seedlings I initially started died (not Pruden's,Krim, or Russian).

Only 2 Yellow Pear, 1 Tigerella, a few German Orange Strawberry, & 1 Cherokee Purple survived.
Even these are spindly. I was very dissapointed, but I'll just chalk it up as a learning experience. ;)
I reseeded all in peat pots, but I don't know if there's enough time to get them to 6" in order to transplant & still have enough time to be productive.

All of those darn hybrids (Early Girl & Juliet Grape) I grew in peat pots are doing very well. They are about 8-12". I've been planting just a few in the garden and enjoying giving some to co-workers.

Even though Wal- Mart has 6 pack tomatoes (4") for .84 now, folks really appreciate the home-grown seedlings.

Hi everyone, It has been a while since I posted, but I still lurked from time to time..I have been busy w/life..New job, youngest graduated and went off to college, became a first time grandma, DIL had thyroid cancer, helping Son and DIL remodel their new Fixer Upper, which they moved into 2 days before she gave birth..and other every day life moments..

The hubby and I are almost finished building my long awaited Recycled window/patio door greenhouse ...The roof is now on, and other than a few more touchups..paint... trim..building potting tables, raised bed. etc..I now have room for plenty of plants..

:ep Wow! You have more varieties than most seed catalogs!
Glad to hear things are starting to settle down enough that you have time to post.
Wishing you lots of luck with your garden, I would love to see pictures when you get all those tomato plants going gangbusters.

:fl for you Ginny!

Please do the best you can keeping track of your varieties in the garden. An heirloom could be defined as "handed down in the family" or "unique to a particular part of the the world." Knowing the performance of these could and should be of interest to your gardening neighbors and family members - maybe, for years and years to come.

Don't be like me last year and get the Yellow Submarines mixed up with the Ildi's in a hopeless situation . And, I was looking forward to establishing the Yellow Submarine as a family heirloom ;).

I've had good tomato gardening years for about the last 3 or 4. That's what lures me into having 29 varieties of heirlooms and hybrids this year. (That and the example and encouragement of others :).) It would take courage to make a commitment like you have after 1 or 2 bad seasons. Bravo!

:fl for your tomatoes!
