Working on a Mother's Day gift for my wife (from our 3 y.o. daughter) yes I know that Ive still got a month but sometimes these ultra sneaky super cool gifts take time to develop and given my wife's schedule I don't have hours and hours to work on it.

Ok so here's the situation. I bought a large terra cotta pot and I've got paint for my daughter to express herself with. She LOVES to paint and thought it would be a fun gift for my wife and something that she can re-use year after year and it still have special meaning. My wife loves to garden as much as I do its one more thing we love to work on together.

So here's the dilema. Do I take my 3 y.o. daughter to our favorite nursery to have her pick out plants to plant in the pot and fill it to surprise her with on Mother's Day? Or do I get a gift certificate to our favorite nursery and let her pick out what she wants to put in it?

I'm 99% sure of what she would put in it, but I don't want to be too forward with the gift either.

So if you were going to give this gift, or your a mother who'd be getting this gift which option would you prefer?

Thanks folks

If my husband and sons were doing this for me I would want the whole enchilada at once. No matter what kind of plant ended up in it I would treasure it!
I'm sentimental that way...

I vote with thistle. Whatever your daughter picks out will be perfect! I am guessing this will not be the only plant your wife will get this summer...If she is longing is for something in particular- don't worry she'll get it!! Sweet idea, she will really appreciate it!

Me too. Some gifts are better if they're "no assembly required". ;) Maybe get her a special flower in her favorite color, something not too finicky or high maintenance though.

Totally agree with all above. She will treasure the idea that you and daughter took the time to put it all together for her. It will totally be from your heart.

S sweet!!!

I agree with the above posters, Give her the pot already planted. She will have oppotunities to plant it herself in the years to come, she wont have to worry about it this year though.

My opinion doesn't count (I'm male) but I'd rather go to my favorite nursery with my 3 year old and together pick out the ideal plant.

Of course, while I was there, some more plants would find their way into my cart....side benefit.

I would let your daughter pick them out. Not only will Mom appreciate the gift, she will appreciate even more how happy it makes that 3 year old to have picked out Mom's present. There is nothing better than a gift that comes from the heart! Plus, you are raising another gardener!
