But the planting space is a box 1.5 feet by 8 feet.. they were talking about spreading one plant 20 feet?? I would need two a male and a female? could I still do this?
The spread is more above ground, though I have to remind my plants about that during summer  If your pergola is 8 feet wide, you could do it with a kiwi, especially if you found a self fertile one for your zone. They are less aggressive usually, too.

Couldn't resist a quick check. Here's a gardenweb conversation clip:

There are self-fertile kiwi, just not whole species that are self-fertile. Breeders in New Zealand found a self-fertile fuzzy kiwi a few years ago in a batch of 'Hayward' seedlings, and have used it to breed a large number of self-fertile kiwis, although none have been good enough to release so far. These do turn up very rarely, and some day, most cultivated kiwis may be self-fertile. Keep in mind that all wild grapes are also dioecious, with only male and female vines, but nearly all modern cultivars are now self-fertile."

Wink to Sylvie for suggesting climbing beans same time as me;)
Wink back at ya hahaha! :p

I need to be thinking about my own plant puzzles, guess I just love thinking about plants!

How about this kiwi cousin from Big Dipper Farm for $7?

Actinidia polygama
Silver Vine
"A decidious climbing vine with scented flowers in June. Very ornamental with yellow edible fruit and leaves with silver-white markings. The leaves contain substances that make them very attractive to cats and for this reason they are especially useful as a sedative for lions, etc in zoos.
Stock #: 758-002
Zone: 4-9 Height: 15-20' Full-Sun Part-Shade"

"yellow edible" does not necessarily mean delicious, tho :/

Kiwis supposedly grow and prune like grapes, BTW

Hardy kiwis actinidia kolomiktas at least are listed as hardy to zone 9, too. I didn't know that. Two to pollinate, but the males look beautiful, variegated pink and white, and less aggressive than my annoying argutas. (Hmmm, something to do with pink?)

I can't believe no one has suggested passionfruit! :th Not only is it a beautiful vine with interesting leaves, but delicious fruit and gorgeous flowers! :throw

Here's the most common one: http://www.floridata.com/ref/P/passiflo.cfm

There are literally hundreds of varieties, though.

I live in a zone 8/9 & we can grow grapes like crazy here. Wonder what the difference is for you? Anyhoo, melons like cantaloupe & honeydew would work, as would cukes, pole beans or sweet peas. That is if you are not looking at a one time planting.

What a very cool area!
I love this little area.. if you walk around the swings behind the horizontal support bars for the jasmine on the other side behind the shed is how you get to the chicken coop to get the eggs .. without going into the coop..

the coop run is on the right side of the shed..

and

and I will put this in another thread but I will post it here too..

This is what we added today.. (not the raised beds but the rows)

that pretty much uses up the entire left side of the property.. going to "suck-up" the center now. :gig

ooooooooooh, that is a NICE set up!!!!

Wish I had more suggestions... I'm getting a Jasmine vine as well... but I bought it like 3 years ago and it wasn't doing well on my apartment wall, so I moved it to my mom's yard. She's let it get out of control, so I'm going to swipe it now its over 12' tall and put in on our porch at our new house. Those things NEED constant sun to thrive well.

that jasmine plant grew all the way to the top of the pergula.. unfortunatly I had it on thin netting and it fell.. after repeated attempts at rehanging the winter did a job to it.. it is half the size now.. but that grew 10 feet in less than one season..

Hoping it will come right back.
