I just put on a pot of black-eyed peas to ring in the New Year. It's a tradition in our southwestern home.

I love this topic ..of course it is food related and that is my favorite subject

caviar on toast points ...oh I so wish i could afford my taste in caviar ..I know it sounds all snotty and pretentious but I really do adore it and have begged my husband for a jar of even the lesser priced bulk kind at the Ukrainian market

so no on the caviar for NY day this year

but I am going to have our most romantic dinner my husband and I love to eat together

fresh dungeness crab in our laps ..at the beach :)

rain or shine that is what we will do ..but not tomorrow it will have to be Saturday ..I thnk I just like to make excuses to eat fresh crab!!!

my husband's family used to eat pickled herring on New Years

I tried the black eyed peas one year and that particular year was horrible so bagged that one!

I think I will stick with fresh crabs on New Years if nothing else the pleasure alone is worth it!!!

OH OH OH I almost forgot!!! tomorrow I will be eating a fresh garden salad!!! :weee

you guys seriously I have had it in my mind all year long I would have a fresh garden salad on NY day and guess what? there is certainly enough to make a salad tomorrow ..in fact I may pick some today to be safe and sure I will have it ..you never know this time of year and I am so close!!!

I would say if the greens and herbs make it through Feb I can brag I reached my goal of a perpetual harvest this year..it is scant now but I know what will grow and how to keep it going ...

Happy New Year you guys

thanks so much for all your wonderful sharing and advice ...hope your gardens do brilliantly and you get lots of flowers fruits and vegetables ...let's all eat well in 2010!

I don't happen to eat pork, and I need to do about three loads of laundry before I can do anything else, but will be making some sort of sauerkraut-type dish (venison and sauerkraut?) and beans. Can you believe it, the stupid grocery store was out of blackeyed peas, bread yeast AND cinnamon sticks. I think my New Year's resolution is going to be, "buy in bulk and avoid the grocery store frustration." I've got navy beans and runner beans I can make similar to the blackeyed peas recipe. Also going to bake cookies for a neighbor who gave me a bunch of firewood.

Husband informs me that he is organizing a party with his co-workers. I hope not to be held here, but just in case...
