I sure hope the black soldier flies find their way into my compost pile again this year. I have never seen anything make such quick work of food scraps.

And from what I've read, black soldier flies do not tolerate your standard houseflies being in the same area. If memory serves me correctly, they secrete some sort of "Housefly B Gone" hormones where they lay their eggs.

I never had much luck with composting in a container, and I think I know what I did wrong, I didn't have enough holes to drain excess liquid. Now I just have a couple holes that are sheltered from most rain and turn them over every time remember. Works great, but I think if I'd cut more holes in my bin and turned it more that would've worked too

Yep they put up a,"This pile occupied - go away" sign. Soldier flies are great. They can really gobble up anything decaying in a hurry. I built a soldier fly hatchery where I put wet garbage and the ofal when I butcher rabbits. Check youtube for instructions on how to make one. The larvae are are top notch high protein chicken feed and self harvesting. There is also a market for them under the name phoenix worms in pet stores that cater to the reptile crowd. I had a stray cat run over on the road in front of my house. I tossed it into my soldier fly hatchery and it was gone in a week down to clean bones.
