Next years compost

Next years compost pile is finishing up. I re-worked it for the last time a few days ago. I spread it all out until it was about 8" deep then added 20 cubic feet of grass clippings and tilled it all together. Then I got to pile it all back up again. It's getting to big to handle now, so I started a new pile.

Nice... my lazy butt hasn't turned mine in a long long time. I just keep piling it up with anything and everything. I bet its soaking wet all the way through. With how wet and cool its been I haven't checked to see if its warm are not. I need to poke it in the morning and see if it steams

Though the pile is certainly the best there are easier ways to make compost for those of us with delicate backs. You can bury you garden wastes, till fresh manure right into a garden and then leave to rest. I also refer to my chicken manure as instant compost. Of course it's not but it saves a step in production. We use it in the spring, fresh, till it into the garden and let in rest until it is time to plant corn.
But, Monty, I love your compost and appreciate the hard work it took.

Yep Catjac, lots of ways to create and use compost, all of them gold. I emptied my chicken coop bedding into my garden last fall for the first time in four years, then tilled it in. You can tell where I put it and which areas didnt get any.

Monty, that is work but next spring that will be real nice. Real nice.

Mini Mount has been slowly growing along - today added a bucket of: all the skins from the 12+ jars of canned tomatoes, couple of old squash and various other garden leftovers and a PILE of chicken poo (BTW, loving the sweet pdz in the coop - clean up is pure poo). I dug a hole in the top for the veggie-ick and that lovely smell of earthy rot came wafting up.
Gonna be a GOOD ONE by next spring.

Hey Cane, do you just use the Sweet PDZ with no bedding? I use the SPDZ in the horse/goat stall so I have some here and the coop is ready for cleaning, so I was just wondering....

My compost pile is twixt and tween most of yours. I left one raised bed fallow and put chicken bedding, grass, and everything else I can find in it. The bed I treated that way last year was full of the great compost I added to all the other beds so I decided to try it again. So far I haven't stirred the mess, but I will a couple of times before fall.
