I usually plant Yolo Wonder bell peppers but couldn't find any in the stores so I figured I'd plant som California Wonder instead. Both are normally open pollinated; but then I noticed all of the seed racks had Cal Wonders but followed by the number 300tmr so I started Googling.
It turns out that Monsanto got hold of some through Asgrow seed (which they bought out) and GMOd it with their sterile seed gene, so if you plan on saving seeds better be sure it's the old Cal Wonder and not the Caifornia Wonder 300tmr. They get sneakier every day. I don't plant GMOs so I guess I'll mail order some Yolo Wonders before they ruin them too.

They sterile seeded cal wonder peppers. Of all the insidious, communist plots!

I can just visualize the fox news reports in 10 years:

Man surrounded and holed up in the mountains will not surrender his Bean seeds. 5 swat teams called in. This reporter is personally disgusted to report that this unshaven varmint up in the hills has been growing non gmo heirloom beans, threatening the world supply of food crops with his disgusting and dirty heirloom habits! Though he is not armed, he is a known veteran, and though he has never been convicted of a violent crime the swat teams were called in anyhow.

On further investigation, except for rumors of another lone non gmo heirloom gardener somewhere in the Gobi desert, this stinking non gmo gardener may be the last of the vermin to roundup!!!

:he

I've got a few select words... and I'm NOT happy about it at all!!! To say such foul things, I only save for Monsanto. :smack

Are you sure that pepper is GMO,or are you just assuming it contains a transgene..... By law the seed has to be labeled if it contains a transgene. The intials sound like some kind of virus resistance gene, the vast majority of which are from conventional sources.

While you might not like Monsanto, you should do a little more diligence and read the seed packets. the terminator gene was NEVER commercialized.

Peppers are not GMO. Companies are protecting their breeding programs. They don't want to spend millions on developing a new strain and have someone steal it. Although breeder companies would be wiser to just sell hybrids, then no worries.

Tmr means variety is resistant to tobacco mosiac virus.

Actually depending upon your definition of terminator gene, it is used in "seedless" varieties as well as sterile females in seed production. Has been since 60's.
