I used to grow a few orchids back in the 70's mostly cattleyas and Cymbidiums. I had a really nice basket of "Green Cascade" in a hanging basket I actually won a few prizes with that one. Then I got interested in fuchsias, another addiction began .
Edited to include some of the orchids shown at the local show here, looking this up I recognized one of the names, this person is still growing and showing, was the one that got me interested in orchids back in the 70's. Now that's dedication. http://www.cvios.org/new_page_12.htm
some year i would love to take a trip to NYBG. but it seems like an expensive ordeal & would bore my DH if i took him.
back in 2000 when I & my family went to Florida to visit Disney, i happen to be looking at a brochure of attractions in the area we were staying in. nearby there was an orchid greenhouse & i really wanted to go to that instead of the parks! still wishing i did. don't know what would have been more expensive a tourist destination-Disney or coming out of their greenhouse with plants!
i'm excited this year since i have 2 different orchids in my kitchen & i've been waiting to see them flower. both i bought at 1/2 price since they were done blooming, so i don't have a clue what colors they could be & the name tags were both missing. both have been growing nicely & putting down new roots the past year. the phalaenopsis hasn't started growing a flower stem yet but the dendrobium has new growth along the stem so i am hopeful to see some flowers starting soon!
