Horseradish sounds like it could grow through asphalt.
That's what I am wondering!

I can send you some, Bay, if you think you can handle it...hahaha. PM me.

ETA: I bet you would get really nice straight roots with the PVC pipe system, Monty.

Bay, I've had Texas chile before, when I was a little kid, but I think it was the version designed for kids. Yes, it was made with black ahhd cahybeenz, "they'll do".

A buddy of mine grows horseradish in 6" PVC pipes. He cuts the pipes to about 5' lengths and fills them with garden soil. Then he just plants the stuff in the pipe. It grows great. The funny thing is when he leans it where ever he wants then moves it out of his way later. I have heard him say several times, "Where the heck did I put the horseradish?"

When he wants to harvest it, he just beats the pipe on the ground to knock the dirt loose and pulls the whole thing out.
Wonder if that'll work for carrots - shorter pipe of course.....
Wonder if you could use different shaped pipes and get square carrots, triangel carrots......

Who was it on here who was talking about British competitive gardeners doing this with parsnips?!

I find parsnips pretty darn homely. If you can put pretty & homely together in the vegetable garden, you'll find a parsnip ;).

You know Cane', the food industry does special things to make carrots attractive. Yeah. Baby carrots . . . you think you know what they are? I wonder how often what is labeled as "baby carrots" in the soopermarket are what the industry knows as "grinders." And, that gives you an idea of what has been done to make a carrot . . . cute.

I've got a black 55-gal plastic drum I think I'll saw off and plant it in. Been trying to decide what to do with it (it's been cut up a little already), so rather than take it to the recycle center, I think this is what I'll do.

Try Apple Horseradish Sauce Recipe. Naturally sweet from the apples with a bit of zing from the horseradish, this no-cook sauce makes the perfect condiment for pork dishes.
