I planted 4 Black been plants in May, Only 1 came up. Today I harvested all the dried pods. I was quite impressed on how fast it grew, produced and even dried right on the plant!

I want to take these dried beans and plant about 20-30 seeds in another bed and try to get enough dried beans to actually store over the winter. Do you think these freshly harvest dried beans are good to go plant now, or is it too early?

I would let them sit on a tray... whatever for 3 or 4 days and then go ahead and plant them. If they dried up on the plant they are probably good to go, especially since it has been so hot. You can always tell when you pick a bean up and drop it, if it makes that "pop" sound as opposed to a kind of a dull thud that it is dry (hard to describe, but you probably know what I am trying to say).

I planted some more pole beans a few weeks ago and the only problem I am having is trying to keep enough water to them. Supposed to be 102* today so I am having to baby these plants until they get some size on them. Keep plenty of water to your beans and I think they will be fine. :)

I've had dried beans sprout in the pod before I could harvest them if it turned wet at the wrong time. Once you know they are dry, and a few days on a tray or screen should really help assure that, I think they will come up and grow.

Black beans really are fast and black bean soup is yummy. I'd go ahead and give it a shot. What can you lose?

I was just thinking 8oz of dried black beans aren't ANYTHING worth having... then it occurred to me they are more then enough to grow a ton more beans worth having and holding!!! YUM!!!! So off I got to plant them.... I know they are dry enough, I meant to harvest them Saturday when I noticed not only were they ready, but dry and the pods were starting to crack open.

Even better, when I harvested this morning, I noticed that there are more blooms on it, so I left the plant in the ground.

This year, when it comes to my garden... I feel exceptionally blessed. Even fighting off the diseases, and the water/rain/heat issues... I am happy with the harvests so far, and the amazing flavors that are coming from it.

:D

I make it 8 days from when you took them from dried on the plant and stuck them straight in the ground until you have beans coming up. Good feedback. Now here's hoping they make it before frost.

I planted my first ones at the end of May and we already had fully grown, dried beans by now! I couldn't believe my luck!

I think our expected first frost is the end of October. Though usually it doesn't happen until November since we're so close to Zone 8 where we live.

Did you just plant beans from a bag of black beans, to get your first plants? I've often wondered about planting those to see what they would do, but have never tried...
