Hey, any man that gets upset when a woman takes the initiative to do construction work shouldn't be allowed to have a wife. Most women I know are so helpless they don't know which end of a screwdriver to use, nor would they ever pick one up with the intent to use one. Tools just don't fit their hands...

No, he wasn't upset at all, he knew he'd been putting it off, it was time. I know you won't believe this but in all the years we've been married we've never had a fight. Put it down to we both have our own TV's and remote controls if you like

We've always gone with... if one says yes and one says no it's an automatic no, but just remember if you say no the next time you want something you might get a no, so compromising is the way to go. I'm of a mind fighting never solves anything, just makes matters worse, so we don't and never have.

@Beekissed, I've always taken the path if it's something I can do I do it (I have/had my own screwdriver, mind you it's missing right now methinks someone borrowed it and didn't put it back). Some years ago DH was working night shift, the door blew off our old furnace in the middle of the night, made a hell of a noise, the smoke alarm was blaring and the basement was full of smoke. I felt my way through the smoke to the switch for the furnace and turned it off, went upstairs lit the fireplace, made coffee and stayed up to make sure everything was safe until DH got home. There I was sitting with a cup of coffee the only thing still white on me were my eyeballs, he said I can fix it, I said no we're getting a new furnace. He can fix just about anything but it was time. There's a lot I can't do but I'm pretty handy when the need arises.

Mom and I are of the crowd that don't wait for someone to do it for us, though we be women. Dad was real handy on a lot of things and other things he had no interest in at all, so Mom had to learn to fix things on her own~furnace, stoves, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, roofing, cars, lawnmowers, wood splitters, etc. I had no man all these years, so had to follow in her footsteps as well...but I haven't garnered even half of what she knows and has done in her 81 yrs.

I feel the same as you, Thistle, I hope to be just like Mom when I grow up too, she's my hero.

Well, I can't even change a light bulb! Guess I have a lot of growing up to do to be like aftermidnight and beekissed.

I can tackle a lot of projects by myself, most of the outdoor non technical projects are mine, but what I admired about Annettes story, even more than her construction gumption was the point about never fighting.

I wouldn't say my husband and I ever fight per se, but we don't always see eye to eye.
If we were dogs he'd be the Great Pyrenees and I would be the Jack Russel.

And I don't believe for one minute that you aren't resourceful and handy @ninnymary .

Thistle, just ask my husband. Speaking of husbands, we don't fight or argue either. We are total opposites. He is very calm, soft spoken, refined and doesn't like swear words. Not that I'm not like that but our temperaments are different. If we can't agree on something, we don't do it or buy it. We both have to be in agreement. It was always that way from day 1.

TOO True! I bought my eldest DD a nice tool kit (on super sale around Black Friday), that has drawers and hooks closed and all of the basic tools you'll ever use, for her housewarming. She LOVES it! The kitchen was remodeled--particle board cabinets that had no handles. I didn't notice that she had put the ones that she and her sister had bought because she had measured, created a template and leveled all 19 of them. She had done such a nice job I didn't even notice it.
Every woman ought to be able to do this, AND to call the repairman. I know of one woman who can't even pick up the phone to call for help.

A lot of members here would turn green with envy over your root cellar !!! It is great that the old tub is still there, so many where just ripped out, for a more " modern" look. @beeper do you live in a old house?

I used to live in a great old guest house, but no longer. Froze in the winter and died from heat in the summer, very thin walls. But I just love the older houses, would love to build an old looking one someday...win that lotto...
