recorded his first 2 songs at a Memphis studio. It cost Elvis $4.

Some of you might have thought I was gonna say: Elvis was born on this date ;).

Yeah, that too ... but not many knew about him until he began recording those songs beginning in 1954. He was 19.

Your grandma, kiddo?! I have cousins born prior to Elvis!

Oooh! I thought someone might have a "thanks for making me feel old" for this thread. I hadn't expected that it would be me posting it!

You are in what this year, Heather - the second or third grade???

You are a winner, @Smart Red !

Being of a suspicious nature, I decided to check a 2nd source for information on Elvis' first recordings. First was My Happiness, a song Connie Francis had the greatest success with.

When Wikipedia said "August 1953," I thought my first source was in error. Then, I realized that 45's have 2 sides so the recording was held for several months. I'll Never Stand In Your Way in January 1954 must have been recorded for side B.

I'm tempted to link Connie Francis singing My Happiness but here is another Elvis song from that first year aaannd one that Yours Truly associates with Elvis: That's All Right. (You can click the green digit to listen :).)

MY source said this song was recorded for his mother. She never heard the record played as the family didn't have a record player back then. It was a bit later that year when he recorded "That's all Right". This song his mother did hear.

My brother and I recorded a couple of songs as well. Dad brought home a machine for making records one weekend. I have no idea what happened to the records.

Elvis lives in our town. Looney as a one eyed, three legged drunk dog, but he thinks he's Elvis. Stands on the corner down by the Burger King, honk at him and he'll dance his Elvis moves. :)

I had a drunk dog once. Or I should say, that I had a dog that once got drunk. It was an accident, but I don't think she thought she was Elvis.
At least, we never caught her singing Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog.

A few years ago we went to an outdoor festival in a neighboring town. We were lured to one area under the shade trees by a beautiful voice singing Elvis songs that sounded every bit as good--maybe better --than the King himself. I was astounded to see that the performer was a very rotund old man sitting at a keyboard. He was belting his heart out, tho. Gotta give him credit for that.
(Actually, he was probably about the age Elvis would have been at the time)

My mother would get very upset whenever his songs were played on the radio or TV. She said that his dancing was immoral and was very insulting ! One day I asked her why ... it seems that she and his mother were fifth cousins and she said that it brings shame to the entire family. I wish that I could have inherited some of his money . But alas, this was not to be !
