One Alaskans greenhouse

Everything from Cuteness to Cucumbers abound these days. First litter’s opening they’re eye’s now and i’ve got a half dozen cukes about 2 inches long right now. They’ll be full on fruit in 2-3 weeks.

And my wino tomato plant the Brads black heart was advertised as having wispy, almost diseased looking foliage, so when it’s only 16 inches tall and the stalk is the size of my thumb, i have to think; the rabbit wine is having a good affect!

Erected the “annex” today and moved some of the cold hardy stuff outside. This gave me some much needed room in the greenhouse.

starting to get back after the outer cage project in the rabbitry as well. By this time next week i’d think these little guys will be ready to explore some new territory!
I like leaving the nest box in till they are out more than in and by then they’re feet are big enough to preclude any problems on the wire. Right now i’d be a little nervous about someone hanging up a front foot.

Im looking at re-building the nest boxes and not tapering down the front this time. I’ve seen a style with only a v cut into the front and believe the higher front would give me another 4-5 days of containment before kicking them out into that cold cruel world!

As i look around in here i cant help but be thankful. Each year i start a couple dozen comfrey seeds, and between the jan- feb stratification period and then nurturing them thru till planting i usually end up with half of them. i’m content with half, long as they’re good ones. This group are the nicest i’ve ever grown.

The Sweet success cucumbers are our gold standard which we grow every year. Early on, it’s a flower and a cuke at every node! More than half of them will go on to be nice big fruit, unlike the paltry store bought stuff we’ve been eating since November!

And some baby bunnies got they’re world turned upside down today, when i pulled a couple nest boxes. They were starting to be out more than in so i went ahead and turned them loose. Pandemonium ruled for a bit!//

I had time today to chop in one of two new beds, this 8 footer will house Anise hyssop; a favorite tea mint of ours.
in a couple days, it will have settled 3-4 inches and i’ll back fill with 707 potting mix and rabbit poop.

This is the second little handful of beans in as many days and that amount will triple next week then hold for several months! These are the bush beans, pole beans wont be far behind now.
i’ve also got cukes plenty big enough to eat and will be doing my best to keep the orphans cleared out by next week as well.

The Anise Hyssop & snap peas are in the ground and Monday i begin preparing the garden beds.

Not just a “Thank you Lord day but a perpetual season at this point”.

The main beds were amended today and sprinkler watering began in prep for planting. Tomorrow i start assembling the drip manifolds and will begin planting once that’s done.
even though i’ve got plenty or rabbit manure i’m still going to apply the regular amendment schedule this one more year.

All 7 beds each receive 10 lbs of Humic, 10 lbs of Azomite, 10 lbs of paramagnetic basalt and lesser amounts of fish bone meal, alfafal meal, neem seed meal, langenbite, oyster shell, prilled limestone, kelp meal and feather meal.

With those tubes placed, i planted Kale, broccoli and cabbage today and got all but one tray of starts moved out to the annex. With any luck i’ll have the greenhouse back to normal by Thursday and the remainder of the main beds populated By this time next week.

here’s a real nice tray of onion starts, grown from seed And some celery which out extension agent says is the hardest thing to grow in Alaska?

I also got the drip going on the fruit trees And a hundred other small things.

Sounds like you got a lot done Alasgun. That is such a good feeling. I have two packages of cabbage that I got free from Baker Creek. Send me a pm if you would like them. I'll never use/plant them.

Today the Swiss chard and potatoes we’re planted, then i went back over both and seeded oats into both beds as a cover crop & rabbit fodder!
The greenhouse exterior was washed and the shade cloth went on the tomato end and the back side of the roof. I’ve had issues with refraction coming thru the roof panels and scalding tender stuff in the ends of the main harden beds. This fixed it.
The squash tunnel was moved into it’s bed for the season and will get populated once the plants are fully hardened off.
Beans are kicking in pretty good and we’ve got enough cukes now that Ruthy made the first 1/2 gallon of pickles today!
All the transient stuff is out in the hardening annex now except for a couple flats of flowers, which can wait a bit.

That's a remarkable list of amendments @Alasgun, where do you get all of them? I've tried annelid cycle mix, chicken manure, a bit of kelp meal & fish emulsion but most only in quite small amounts. I've not seen many on your list anywhere, and some of them I've never even heard of! I have heard of Azomite though, and that it is a really excellent garden amendment, but I don't know where one might buy something like that. I'd like to try it someday. I've only ever used neem as an oil mixed with water to be sprayed on plants with aphids, and it works very well, but I didn't know you could add it as a seed meal. What a great post you made here, this is an education in itself for me! If you feel like expanding on your use of these amendments, and what they do, I'm all eyes....
