Yesterday i finished roofing the Generator shed so today i offered to work with the folks returning from the fish wheel.
Every year about this time Folks from the church man the fish wheel then share the fish amongst themselves and fill the freezers for our food bank. This year was exceptional with something approaching 400 salmon taken. The vast majority are red’s but there were roughly 30 kings this year as well.
A picture’s worth a thousand words so here’s a view of how my day went.
One fellow outside emptying and sorting coolers into trays that are put thru the window to the army of women inside; who reduce the fillets to fit in the vacuum seal bags. Others pat them dry and put them in the bags. Then they come thru another window to me and another fellow who stand there running a pair of commercial vacuum sealers. Bagged fish are then sent to a pair of chest freezers for storage. Along the way Workers are encouraged to take all the Salmon they want for the year and the remainder find homes thru the food bank.
roughly 15 people processed those fish in 5 hrs, and i’ll just finish out my day in a chair now; certainly not gonna have Salmon for supper.😳

Potatoes and Onions received a foliar feeding this morning and are looking very well; at the moment!
i also started a batch of compost tea which will be applied as a foliar as well, in a couple days, once its done.
when things get to this size foliar feeding is so much easier than anything else!

This is my first stab at growing onions in a somewhat protected environment and if they keep this up; i’ll never grow then “in the open again”. These went in the ground as set onions on May7th.

Got a couple doe’s bred this morning too.🤗

Took a minute to “smell the roses” this morning. Each morning i make the rounds, picking whats ready and was pleased with what greeted me. Along with the usual i also found a handful of Asparagus stragglers; the rest are making ferns right bow; a handful of strawberries from the newly planted bed and a small handful of peas which are starting to produce!

so then i took a stroll and noticed the potatos need another side rail and the pumpkins are populating the arch!

Got flies? I’ve never seen anything like this. I had no idea there were so many in the area because they aren’t pesky this year; like some. Anyway open it up add water come back when the dead flys are deep, close the top and toss it! I put these in the burn barrel and with the lid on, it’s hot enough they dont have to wait for me to burn trash.😳This is the 4th one so far this year; one on the compost pile and one on the rabbits poop slide.
notice that dead flys go from the green line most of the way to the top. They are so thick that those in the trap will lay eggs in the dead ones below them and you’ll actually end up with maggots in there too. That’s when my sensibilities kick in and i change it. This time i went a little too long so i got a whole crop of babies too!😳
earlier i bought a whole box of 10 and will certainly be back at the box store for a couple more boxes before fall. ( can’t say that im a fly trap hoarder; just dont want to go into spring short)
This is two traps; both equally, disgustingly full! Sorry if im grossing anyone out; just wanted to offer a solution to anyone who may be wondering how to get rid of fly’s.

Do the flies lay eggs in the garden? I've never seen anything like this! Or are they flies that hang around the yard and buzz around your head driving everyone mad?

@heirloomgal , i dont see much for flys anywhere on the property; even around the compost or bunnies And certainly not in the garden. You’d think with this many in a trap (in a two week period) you would see them elsewhere. Also; the traps are within 50 ft. Of each other. In this general vicinity the poly drum is located where i render salmon carcasses. The drum is entirely sealed with no fly’s in evidence around it either. kind of a mystery to me where they all come from but im happy to have found a way to control them. Now if someone would make a scent based trap that worked this well for mosquitos id be in hog heaven.😊
