Osage Orange Fruit?

There used to be a "fad" in slicing, drying and polyurethane coating the osage orange, then using the slices as flowers, attatched to a wire stem. Also used in Christmas wreaths. I guess that was back in the early 70's. Should have had some macrame' with it, maybe.
