Both artichokes & cardoons are really easy to grow, especially from root cuttings. They are from the same family & are very tough. They die back a lot in winter but my 5 year old clump of cardoons happily survived well-below zero temperaturs for two months this last winter -- without any protection. In fact I caught my chickens eating the tough leaves as it was the only thing alive. I wish you were nearer , I would send you a cutting
