I have a copy of most of the SHR tapes. The District threw all their Schoolhouse Rock things away -- Conjunction Junction, Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, and my favorite, American Government so I kept them and continued to use them with my students.
Every fifth grade class I taught had to memorize the Preamble to the Constitution. Most had to sing it a'la School House Rock, but a few could recite it without singing. How such an important document -- the foundation to our country and its laws -- not be taught in school is beyond me.
The only time I watched cartoons was when I spent the night at a friends.
I wondered what the allure of hanging out in your pj's during the best part of the day was.
I'm lucky to live in Montana - its such an anomaly in so many things. Montana kids are OUTSIDE (the majority anyway). Maybe not the whole time its light out (5 am til 10:30 right now!) but doing tons of active stuff. Lots of parents hike, bike, fish, raft, boat, ski with their kids. DH said someone was in the sports store he works at the other day looking for a life vest for a 5 week old baby, so they could take him rafting! Oh, and so many of them have their own dirt bikes or 4 wheelers (not too much exercise but they're outside!). And we have some of the lowest rates of obesity. Its always such culture shock to me to travel and see rampant obesity.
There are 5 little boys at out cul d sac. ages, 7, 7 , 6. 5 and 4 years old. they ride their bikes, skate boards, run , etc., they are at our house every day, playing hide and go seek, tag, tickle sessions, etc. in our house and currently they "help" me to completely remodel our kitchen ... take down 2 walls, floor tile, remove all cabinets, and now starting to rebuild. They are learning life skills and having a blast doing it.
