I want to make a painted barn quilt to hang on the back side of my garage. Have any of you tried it? They are so pretty. I've seen them in magazines for several years. Mine would be half of an exterior plywood sheet. It sounds a little expensive to make. Any ideas?

This sounds really cool- I have never heard of it. I assume you somehow paint the "quilt". Do you have any pics of one?

Interesting,

I just read the history of this Barn Quilt. Very cool idea, I hope it sweeps the country. http://www.harrisoncountyohio.org/community/quiltbarn.htm

This reminds me of the Hex signs or Amish Barn Stars from the past.

They remind me of quilts too.

I love it.

Hopefully folks will be submitting pictures as they see them. I am afraid out here in Southern New Mexico there just aren't that many barns around.

Lesa, I don't have any photos, but there is an article about it in "The Quilter" magazine, January 2008. There is also an article in the Tennessee Home & Farm magazine, Fall 2009. I've seen several articles in other magazines the last few years. You can google the subject and there are lots of ideas.

Ron, the painted quilts are not only painted on barns but exterior plywood panels and hung. Mine would be 4' x 4' with a minimum of outdoor paint colors, (4 colors) to cut costs. They are actual quilt patterns. We are fast losing our wooden barns around here. A little sad, but even a wooden shed would be nice.

I just looked it up- very neat! I love the idea the squares can be made individually and then connected. Great winter project! How about using it along an unsightly fence? Very neat idea, please take pics and show us yours!!

Lesa, I'm still in the dreaming stage. I want to know cost before I begin but it would be so pretty on the back of my garage, under the eave. Maybe you can log on to our Tennessee magazine website and see the article. Apparently, this is a big deal all over a number of states, anywhere there are quilts and barns. The article says "The Appalachian Quilt Trail boasts more than 130 quilt barns....It stretches some 300 miles across 19 counties." I think it would be very pretty on a fence or any building. I love color in the yard, don't you?

Edited to add: the article is "Backroads Treasures" (Quilt barns brighten up the state's hollows this season.)

I am going to read these links Ron posted, I have never heard of this... I know what a quilt quilt is, I'm sewing one now... but hanging one outside, sounds like I need special paint! :D

I know I'm getting into this conversation rather late....but just in case anybody is still reading out there....I paint barn quilts.....various sizes. So many people like them but don't have the large surface for a 4 x 4 or an 8 x 8, so I paint them in smaller sizes too, as small and 14 inch squares. Contact me for more info. I'm building a website now, but can send photos in the meantime. Bearcreeklodge@live.com
