The pansies seem to be really hitting their stride. The one that looks like it has been tie dyed is called Brush Strokes.

I usually plant some pansies in the fall. They will often bloom (tiny blooms) all winter in between freezes, and come back nicely in the spring. I never thought about WHEN in the fall to plant them to make a difference. I guess I plant them late, because I wait for them to go on clearance.

I now think that WHERE you plant them in the fall also makes a difference. I have some in several different spots that have done more or less ok throughout the winter. But THIS spot seems to have been the best!

What a lovely colour combination Finnie! I agree that location seems to play a role. Pansies don't like to be sopping wet, so good planting them with their 'shoulders' a little on the high side in a spot that drains well helps. I have a bunch in containers that are sheltered by the overhang of the roof, and those ones seem to do the best.

The saturation of the colours in pansies is what stops me in my tracks. The purples lean towards black, and the yellows can be like staring at the sun.

Last year I harvested a few blooms and dried them in between the pages of old phone books. The preserved blooms are still sitting in a drawer; I haven't done anything with them, but they make me smile every time I see them. Once dried the colour fades, and they become very silky and pliable-- not brittle at all.

Two pansies successfully overwintered and are blossoming now.

They also offered a lot of self-seeded offspring. I dug them out and would pot them on later as the flowers on my small shop windowsill. The color is lovely.

I also sowed two varieties this year, dark purple and burgundy red.
