Pileated Woodpecker

Not sure if anyone knows what these beautiful birds are, but wanted to share a video I was really proud to finally get. I've been trying to get photos/videos of a Pileated Woodpecker for awhile and finally got the chance to film this male clinging to the side of a tree and looking around. Such beautiful birds- saw Eastern Phoebes, Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Flicker, and Carolina Wren's in that same short span of time. Didn't know if any fellow bird enthusiasts would be interested to see this fella up close.

What a great shot of him. We have them here too, but I have only seen one once, in the woods about 15 miles north of our home.

We have them here too. We put out high energy suet and they come from time to time. My wife picked up the birdwatching bug from her mother and she tells me a suprising variety of woodpeckers enjoy the suet as well.

We had them at our old house, in town, that would show up from time to time. There were lots of old growth trees that they like. We have them here too, I love their call.

Capturing one on film is beyond awesome!

So glad folks are enjoying it. I usually can't ever catch them sitting still like this for photos let alone a video. It was a blessing to see him and his two friends come up to the trees surrounding. Didn't get much into birding until this past year- the first time I had ever seen bright red Tanagers and was so amazed because I didn't know they were around here. Made it a goal to identify the birds we saw, in particular favoriting these Pileated Woodpeckers, Summer Tanagers, and the Indigo Bunting (still have yet to photograph this one).

Your goals bring a twinge of jealousy here! Buntings? Maybe I can travel and be so fortunate.

Even the Western Tanager may take some work. And, the Pileated Woodpecker, I see so infrequently it's a surreal experience the very few times I have!
