Voles are more like moles than like field mice. They have a long, skinny face and spend most of their lives in tunnels they dig under the soil. Unlike moles who are carnivorous, voles eat vegetative material under the ground. Both moles and voles have a darker pelt than the grey of field mice.

I haven't had a problem with voles, but I have seen a vole dash out of the gardens from time to time.

According to the map SC has both varieties, at any rate I have not had problems with them, maybe because I live in the suburbs? We do have chipmunks and rabbits, but they have never bothered my potatoes. Also, several neighborhood cats running around might help. Crossing my fingers voles don't find my garden, bugs and rabbits provide enough pests for me to deal with.
