While digging up potted lilies to plant in the ground, I came across several single lily scales, pieces off lily bulbs that can grow new lilies. Is it possible to just plant them in the ground and have lilies grow from them over time (in two years or so), or do they have to be placed in sealed plastic bags of vermiculite and put in a warm place for several months to develop properly? I had some lilies show up in a garden this year after a few years of them having been absent, and I suspect they are "children" of my former lilies, so I was wondering whether they grew from scales off the older plants that were in the ground?

One year I carefully took a lily bulb apart scale by scale and planted each and every one. It's been a handful of years since then, and I have a nice drift of yellow lilies in back of the border. It does take some time for the tiny babies to grow up and flower.

Wonderful, Smart Red!
Did you plant them in the spring, summer, or fall?
