My chicken poo has not killed my red wigglers so far. It gets really hot in the bin, but they just move down until it cools down for them. I shread a lot newspaper or add leaves when the chicken manure goes in. However, I only have 6 chickens, so they don't make that much.

It is just an old city trash bin I got from the trash man. It had a crack in the wheel and they replaced it for the owner. Perfectly good for a compost bin. And I like free recyclable things. I cut the bottom off with a saws all. I drilled one inch holes all over it. Then I cut a door in the front of the bottom. This way I can dig out a small amount if I am too lazy to move or turn the whole thing. Good luck, composting is fun!

One of my compost bins is similar, but I cut the bottom out and flipped it over since I did not have wheels or a lid in my freebie. It actually out-composts my fancy "eartbin" I got from the local cooperative extension for attending a composting seminar. But it was free too, so of course it was a keeper. Recycled and re-purposed materials are great!!! My garden, shop, house, and yard are full of the stuff.

i would agree, mine out-composts everything else I've tried. I have bought expensive bins, used chicken wire circular bins, done pallets, and piles. The only thing I haven't tried is a tumbler, and that is due to the cost.

I like my trash can composter the best of all. I have been looking for the city truck drop off new trash cans to owners who have broken ones again. They gave me the last one when I asked for it and told them what I would use it for. They said the broken ones are not recycled, only thrown away.

Wooo, what a great pic & info :D I may just go for it, I wanted to try vermicomposting cuz it seemed really cool. Great idea about the door...I'll have to keep my eye open for a city-trash bin. Thanks!

I want 3, like some folks do with the open 3 bin systems. With my tree and my gardens, I still have more materials than my bin holds. I end up using a lot of the excess for mulch instead right now.
