Hi All and Happy New Year!

I got a bug in my bonnet about growing plums this year. I'm in zone 4 (Minnesota) - any good recommendations or referrals on where to start looking?

My Dad told me that he grew Italian plums as a boy in Idaho - that's a zone 6. He seemed to think that they'd be hardy enough for my area though.

I figured that if I started my research now then I'd be ready to go in May...

:idunno I believe they transplant better in a dorment state. I just do not know of any that can take your cold winters.

We have an excellent restaurant around here that grows everything it serves. After an enormous meal, I was stuffed silly and so shocked to enjoy their plums so much that I couldn't stop thinking about growing some. I cannot remember the variety we planted, but give me a chance to go out in the snow and ice and I'll get back to you. I'm zone 4, too, so I know they can thrive around here...

We grow Italian Prune Plums in Wisconsin...zone 4. It is a good idea to have them in a somewhat protected area. At a house we rented I used to can many quarts of them. Just planted one @ our house two years ago. Hopeing for a few this year!:)

Hey, CC. Finally looked it up. I couldn't find the tag on our own tree, but I'm pretty sure we ordered the Dwarf Mount Royal from Jung's. Zones 4-8. "If you can only plant 1 plum tree, make it this easy-to-grow European plum. The large, deep blue, freestone fruits are very sweet and juicy. Outstanding fresh or for preserves, jame, canning and freezing. Bears heavy crops each year and doesn't require cross pollination. Fruit ripens mid-to-late August."
