BJ, I trellis on hay twine webbed between rebar posts. The green beans I grow make massive vines-if I had to pick them off a wire trellis, I would probably toss the whole thing! With the hay twine, I just cut it loose, fold it over, stomp on it, fold, stomp, fold, stomp, stomp some more-cram in trash bag and I'm done. Clean up complete.

I did the same kind of trellis for the butterbeans.

This is the green bean post from last year-has pics of hay twine trellis.

I've done mine on poles in the shape of a teepee and had great harvests. The only thing to be aware of is making sure the poles are planted deep enough so they don't topple over with a good rain/wind and the weight of the pole beans.

I usually did 5 poles per "planting" and put a couple beans per pole and let them do their thing. The poles were 12-18" into the ground and about 5ft above the ground. Planted them as close to the pole as I could so they'd be able to climb quicker. Little bit of twine to train them onto the pole and once on they never needed any additional training and they flew up the poles. Seems like once they get on they really take off. I'm trying to remember now but I think I had 6 teepees going.

I harvested beans all summer long all they way up to a good hard frost. I prefer picking them that way. I had enough for fresh and to store for the off season that way.

The one downside of doing the teepees was the space between them was a pain to weed. Since I just moved I didn't do beans this year. Next year I will again but I'll do a cattle fence trellis instead so its one long wall of beans saving me space and weeding.

I am glad that Jared posted this . . .

I wrote very much the same thing last night and then, evidently, got sleepy and turned the computer off without clicking "submit."

Here's a pic of our pole bean arch. We have planted on both sides, with a few cucumbers on one of the sides. It is attached to the outside of the beds on both sides.

Well, they sure were easy - just some cattle panesl. This pic was taken about a month ago. The beans are much bigger now, as well as everything else. I noticed lots of little blooms this morning. We are in the beginning of a heat wave that is supposed to last about 2 weeks, so hope it doesn't ruin the crop.
