Last year was my second real gardening attempt ever and I learned a lot from the experience. I got even better results than the first year, and I made mistakes that I learned from. I'm hoping to best last year's garden this year. I have a gardening book that was written specifically for gardens west of the cascades, and it does give a planting calendar, but it's not detailed enough for my liking so I thought I'd come here and see if any other Portlanders have gotten started yet.

So what are you guys starting? I have a greenhouse for starting seedlings and I'm planning on covering my raised beds with plastic film in order to keep the chickens out while the plants get some size on them.

I've started some habanero and serrano peppers. I bought habanero plants last year but probably only picked about a third of what they produced because time ran out. As of yet, nothing has sprouted, probably because the room is too cool.

We just purchased some of those heating mats to place under the pots and some grow lights and are setting them up in our shop. Hopefully the heated soil will get the seeds to germinate. Not sure what the plan is after that because the shop is not heated.

Haven't started anything else as of yet. My artichokes (amazingly) seem to have survived the winter and the strawberries are intact. I planted about 300 garlic plants in October and they are looking good.

The one thing we should seriously be working on is deer fencing. :(

I'm going to edit the subject of this thread because, ya know, there are a few Portlands around, I live south of the important Portland here on the East Coast, it's famous for lobster - and lighthouses! :)

Haha, thanks. I think probably every "Portlander" from around the world forgets that there are other Portlands most of the time.

I'm one state north of you and up on a hilltop, but I have started my tomatoes and peppers inside on a heat mat.

In the greenhouse I started some spinach and it is up. Supposedly I could also get broccoli and a few other cool season crops going in the greenhouse, but I haven't gotten to it.

I started (outdoor) Peas, spinach, lettuce, Arugula, and Cabbage this last week end. Looking forward to spring when I can stop with the cold weather crops.

Unfortunately my space for indoor starts is taken up with baby chickens so it's all going to be outdoor starts this spring.
