whoodat has a really great idea here. I have a friend who was so impressed with my garden that he started his own. So he just plopped down some cheap top soil from Lowes on top of the grass without even tilling. So needless to say they had a horrible season and are really discouraged by the lack of productivity and bugs. so his answer is seven dust for next year. I try to preach the importance of soil quality as a golden rule but some don't want to hear it.hoodat said:If you are limited in the amount of organic matter available remember You will get more and better vegetables out of a small plot of rich soil than a large plot of poor soil. Instead of trying to enrich a large plot by spreading it evenly concentrate on getting a small plot into prime condition and then expand as organic material becomes avalable.
Also if you start smaller you will have less to worry about. For example, I started like 20+ pepper plants but they were to much for me to deal with so I ended up killing all but a few. Same thing with pepper. And then I didn't know that brocoli and tomatoes are not friends that one year....
