I am very much a casual observer of the postal service but I find a lot of things strange, these days.

First of all, I easily remember the arguments FOR corporations, allowing them to compete directly with the USPS with package delivery. Apparently, it was a profitable part of the public service but the arguments for amounted to some sort of right of free enterprise. The USPS struggles to stay out of the red. Now, they reduce the cost of door to door delivery?!

Meanwhile, UPS trucks now back up to the doors of the post office, take on packages delivered to them through the public service, then scoot off around town to deliver. UPS uses the Postal Service to move their packages around the US!

The USPS has some sort of contact with Amazon to deliver their packages. Apparently, it goes beyond Amazon slapping a stamp on a box. Mail carriers deliver Amazon packages on Sundays!

Steve I have not looked at the why's but perhaps Congress a has finally allowed them to make changes that make them more efficient. A big problem has been that every time they want to make a change to become more efficient Congress won't allow it.

Another possibility is that they are working with their competition to find ways to get money from them for services provided. A big part of the problem is that with social media the number of letters and post cards have significantly dropped. By working with the competition they may have been able to greatly increase their volume, thus become more efficient. The carriers have to walk or drive the same routes, if they are delivering more on those routes it has to make them more efficient.

Have you checked out the stamps available? There is a nice gardening set I got last time I needed stamps. It's called "Summer Harvest".

Thanks, that makes sense. The Post Office is the only government body I'm aware of that is supposed to pay for itself but it is so highly regulated it can't. I expect more posturing and grandstanding from our members in Congress in the near future. But I'm just a cynical old man. What do I know?

What do you know? That Government is inefficient and rarely does anything for the good of the country. It's what is good for the top 5% and congressmen.

It won't last long. They expect to lose billions (billions? I think that's what I heard...)
They'll be applying for steeper increases soon.
