After about 30 hours signs of engagement :)

Water, one cutting about to break bud.

Sand, actually two cuttings that broke bud, but the camera only got one. I didn't want to disturb the cutting to turn it for a picture.

I only checked C.L. Royal Gold. Buds breaking is encouragement, but I'm looking for roots.

So far sand is clearly better than water for swelling buds.

Back into the gallon ziplock baggies and under the florescent lights. I'll try and remember to check them again next Saturday or day 15.

Day 11 - I walked by the seed table and a big bud caught my eye through a plastic baggie. And I said to myself it might be time take that one out of the bag, so the buds won't rot.

OL Weeks (red) clearly sand is better than water. Nice bud breaks in sand, minor bud swell in water. Water left, sand right.

Here is Lots the Tag (purple) again the cuttings in sand are clearly further along than the cuttings in water. Nice bud breaks in sand, minor bud swell in water. My wife really likes this rose, it's a nice sized long stem purple rose and very fragrant. I have not idea the variety because I Lost the Tag. Water left, sand right.

I put both water cups back in their ziplock bags and sealed them up. I removed the bags from the cuttings in sand. I might see first leaf soon, which would be a good sign. But we are still looking for roots, aren't we?

CL Royal Gold and April in Paris rose cuttings are lagging behind. The cuttings in sand are not yet ready to come out of the bags yet, so I didnt see a need to photograph them.

Are we having fun yet?

Not a cutting. I have tried germinating rose seeds with no success several times.

In November 2023 I put rose seeds in the refrigerator to stratify. This past spring I planted some of those seeds and they all failed to germinate.

Last week I checked on the seeds in the refrigerator and found one seed that had germinated.

Looks like a rose to me.

Day 15 check up. I discovered newly hatched aphids this morning. So I misted all the cuttings with Palmolive Orginal Green (not concentrated) and water . I reaseached palmolive orginal green many years ago. It's good stuff, made from palm and olive oil, great for soft shell insecticide.

Hopefully you can tell by the bottom of the cups water from sand.

One CL Royal Gold cutting turned black. The cutting was of new wood and rotted, I tossed in the trash.

I'll try and remember to report progress on day 21 next Saturday.

Are you enjoying this rooting late fall early winter rose cutting experiment?

20 day check up.

Let's starts with the failures first. I did increase the brightness of the pictures by 65% so you can get a good look.

CL Royal Gold, water left sand right there is one bud break in water but the cutting has turned mostly black. Cutting in sand not showing much of any activity. So CL Royal Gold is a flop, I tossed both cups in the trash.

Next is April in Paris, it's a beautiful pink rose with intense fragrance. Water left, sand right. In water all cuttings are showing no bud breaks and one cutting has turned black so I tossed it. However the cuttings in sand, has some bud breaks and all but one of the cuttings appears to be in decent shape.

Lost the Tag purple, also a beautiful rose, very fragrant and an unusual purple color. Water left, sand right. Nothing as far as bud breaks in water, but in sand there are good bud breaks.

Best is OL Weeks red. Water left, sand right. Both water and sand are showing good bud breaks but the cuttings in sand are further along.

I'll try and remember to post a 4th week update.
