Do you think that a greenhouse might be too complex for your gardening? (@Dirtmechanic has those solar cell ideas.)
I suspect that greenhouses are nearly as old as the making of transparent glass. Certainly, people must have been bringing plants indoors as soon as they had glass in windows.
When I began working in a range of commercial greenhouses, 2 of them were vintage 1920's. They were in continuous use for 50 years. We can see online photos of fairly large greenhouses with quite ingenious heating systems built into their north walls. Here's a simple one suitable for a backyard. I don't know where the book or article came from but the caption says 1810.
And, there are the cold frames ... Imagine how the gardener would react to having children or even a dog anywhere close. But, anyway
