Cute little chickie baby. :) DH will be ordering some meaty birds when son puts in his order for chickens. Son has had barred rocks. They free range his back yard and do well with the kids and the dogs. They have been very productive layers. They are 2 years old and he wants to try a few other breeds so some of these girls will be going to dinner. (Against all odds, he ordered straight run and got ALL hens! )

Oh wow, he should have played the lottery then! :) I ordered a few female barred rocks once and got all males. They did give me a refund. I hadn't tried them again since, but should.

I agree with you all who said Black Copper Marans tend to be temperamental (mean). It was a pair of Black copper Marans that I had so much trouble with, trying to box them up in the middle of the night to sell to the farm store. The roo would stalk me and attack. I had to beat him off with a big stick, every time I went to the chicken yard!

My little flock is mostly mixes. I've added new hens from various breeds each year, but my roo is a mutt so the chicks are always 'interesting'. This spring I'm planning to add a bunch of Rangers. They grow pretty fast, process out to be really nice roasters, and you can keep the hens!
If you're in it for the long haul, you might consider Jersey Giants. I raised 4 this spring and put the 3 boys in the freezer. I should've waited till NEXT fall because they are very slow to mature, but they TOWERED over the rest of the flock and I was concerned for the girls' safety. Even at half grown they were BIG, meaty birds. If I had let they grow out they would have finished somewhere very close to the size of a turkey!

@canesisters , My MIL's neighbors have a hobby farm/petting zoo. They have a black Jersey Giant rooster they take along with the petting zoo. He runs around with the goats in their pen. He is so gentle and calm that all these kids can be around him. Huge bird!
