It's all relative. What is YOUR dog worth to YOU
I had a mutt (rottie/husky/?) - pulled out of a dumpster with a leg shattered by a shotgun blast. He had heartworms, needed to be neutered, months of therapy to regain use of the leg. Years later he developed cancer and we chose treatment. 5 years later it came back and he was on meds to keep him comfortable for almost 2 yrs after that. Since he was almost 100# everything for him was more expensive. I have NO idea what I spent on Frankie over the years - and contraty to some opinoins, there was then (and is now) no replacing him.
He was a 'once in a lifetime' dog and I would pay just about anything to have him again.
As far as suprise vet bills go - I don't think I've ever agreed to a procedure without asking "What's this going to cost?" My vet knows me better than to pad the bill - I simply can't pay it - LOL.
