Purple Hull Peas

So I planted pinkeye PH peas. My parents used to plant these and as I recall, they were bush plants. Well mine have runners and are taking over the peppers and tomatoes! So I looked it up and the description says a semi-bush variety. So, I guessing they will run on the ground? I don't remember picking pods out of the dirt. Does anyone grow them?

We have grown them. Yes, they'll run on the ground. Not nec. to support. Pretty carefree. Just push around the other plants, and walk through the jungle, unless they bother you enough to thin out. Prolific if they get enough water to fill out. If some dry on the vine you can use for dried peas or plant next yr.

I plant a variety called "Top Pick".The seed pods develop on a stem that rises above the foliage,about waist high.They are very prolific and for the most part,most of the pods mature at the same time.They get so heavy with peas,the stem bends over,but it's still better than picking them off the ground.Of course,some of the pods are in the foliage.Some of the seed pods are 12" long.These are the best peas I've found,IMHO.

They'll run up anything they can reach even if they are semi bush. They also spend a lot of time playing "king of the hill" and climbing up each other. When I had a lot of brush piles I used to plant them around the edges and let them sprawl over the dead brush but you end up with a lot of them you can't reach.
