Optimism. It seems somewhat odd to me that I am something of an optimist. At this time, I am certainly becoming more aware of age and aware of why those we know as "seniors," become more resistant to change as the years add up, an opposite trend.

Optimism / Pessimism. The etymologists have apparently gone with the idea of the words as opposites. Pessimism is derived from words having to do with ground-level, lowest, "bottom-most." Therefore, optimism must be "top-most."

I am wondering why lines haven't been drawn to "optical" – having to do with the eyes and vision. Doesn't it seem strange that gardening suggests optimism but plants grow out of the soil at our feet? Successful gardeners have to very aware of what is happening beneath ground level.

I could make a joke about pessimism, about pestimists but I think that I will save it and put it over in today's funnies thread.
