I have never had those squash or vine borers thankfully!
But, it does make sense about rooting the squash all along its runs.
Some varieties do that better than others.
TROMBONCINI was doing that rooting at every node better than any other variety I ever had, and was also very productive. That variety is also VERY multipurpose, being great as a zucchini, real good as half mature soft and sweet meaty squash, and also great as fully mature, and stores to around new years or later. The one thing is that it is a relatively long season, and is slow to start going, like all Moschata (butternut species) squash.
Most vining squashes will root like that, just, some more vigorously than others.
I guess if I had them borers I'd use multiple techniques.
Rotate or even skip years
Plant rooting vigorous varieties
Use a ton of Diatomaceous Earth
Have the local Bigfoot kids who hunt Lizards bring them to my garden
Frogs and Toads too
I'd probably innoculate the whole area with that BT stuff too
I sure hope my wild big Praying Mantis come into my garden again this year.
