when I was a kid playgrounds where blacktopped, now there rubber matted

That's because our parents weren't inclined to sue if we came home with a little road rash. Also we were much tougher back then. It was all that walking uphill both ways through the snow to school that developed our characters. ;)

Our house had tongue-in-groove vinyl plank flooring when we bought the house. We get lots of compliments on how nice the floors look. Caring for it is simple:
** We have a rechargable, battery, Shark Navigator electric broom, for picking up loose dirt & cat hair. It takes 5-10 minutes to do our whole 1200 ft home.
** mop with water, to which I add vinegar & a healthy squirt of liquid dish detergent.

This Lowe's listing is similar to what we have.

If you divide it out (each plank is roughly 2 sq ft [28 sq ft for the pkg]), just the flooring ends up being $1.95/sq ft.

Its nice looking, for the most part, except for a couple minor issues:
** if you sit in one place all the time (as in a chair at a table or a living room chair) & slide your feet on the floor, you can eventually see a worn area. My DH does that, in his easy chair, so we put a small rug down for his feet.
** if you don't put furniture pads on your chairs, moving them around will scratch the floor. We put felt pass on all our furniture legs.
** We have noticed that when it cools down in the house, some of the ends of the floating planks separate, leaving 1/8" gaps. When the house warms up the gaps get smaller.
