I do love the smell of a real tree. Growing up we would always go to a friends farm and cut a cedar out of the pasture. Fun times. After the farm was sold we would go to a cut your own place, no cedar trees. :( After our boys moved out we went to a pre-lit artificial. But I so miss the smell of the cedar (or pine) I try to addd the fragerance with scented products. Not really the same (or even hardly close!)

I have always loved the smell and the look of a real tree, but my dog has a weird skin allergy to evergreen trees and breaks out all over in itchy hives, asthma-like symptoms and her eyes get red and watery....so now we do a fake tree. But it does have its perks. It looks real enough, I can put it up really early (week before Thanksgiving) and keep it up late (week after New Years) and it is not a fire-hazard since my wood-burning furnace that heats our entire home is really hard on a real tree. They don't last long in this house. Nice not to have to water one also!

We transitioned to a fake tree a few years back. Our 2 cats think they are lumberjacks so you can see wehre thats going. Love the smell, but I'm with Journey it has its perks. With the wood heat in our house I felt like I was FOREVER watering the tree too.

Our fake one is from my wife's grandmother who no longer wanted to deal with it. She said she'd rather come over and enjoy everybody elses trees all lit up. She does have a small table top one that she enjoys so its a win win.

Speaking of being allergic to the evergreens: Years ago I worked in a florist shop, where we would get mixed evergreen boughs during Christmas decorating time. One of the cedars had these huge yellow pods of pollen (?). What a wonderful smell but my nose and throat would practically shut down after working with them for days on end. I think it was Port Orford Cedar, pretty expensive. My nose is acting up right now just thinking about it!

After my husband passed I didn't do any decorating for several years. With only me in the house, it was just too much trouble. Then my sister-in-law moved in with her family for a year or so. I came home one day to find the house all decorated and looking lovely. A brand new pre-lit tree sitting in front of the window, wreaths on the doors - the whole shabang. I wouldn't have thought it, but it was really nice to 'see' all the pretty holiday stuff. When they moved out they left all of it for me. So now I put it up to remind me of how much they love me and how much I miss them.
It's a fake tree, but it's special to me.
:hugs

Real or Fake?? OK, I think I might have all of ya'll beat. last year, the house was in turmoil after a pipe burst in the ceiling and flooded the house. It is NOT fun to come home from work and be greeted by a flowing river running down the sidewalk, just in case anyone wants to know......... Anyway, I had NO Christmas spirit, as in nada, none, zilch. But I had a 4 year old grand daughter. So....... I cut out a tree from green Christmas wrapping paper and taped it to the wall. Then I handed her construction paper, scizzors and tape so she could "decorate" the tree. She loved it and that was all that mattered. Real or Fake?? Definately fake.

Actually, that's my definition of real. It's something your granddaughter will never forget.

My Christmas spirit has been on low since retiring. It just seems to be so much trouble for someone living with Mr. Scrooge (another story there). This year my granddaughter announced that she was putting up my tree and she did. I'm determined to not change a thing - not the lights that skim the outside going up and down nor the fact that most of the ornaments are crowded around the middles. She got the tree up from the basement and assembled it herself, she got all the (and I mean all) ornaments out and on. She finished and declared it perfect. Who am I to question or alter?

My Gypsy also contends that she will take the tree down and put everything away. I'm hoping, but not holding my breath. At almost 10, she tends to think bigger than do. Hum-m-m-m, she's a lot like me in that, I suppose.

Love, Smart Red
