How do you flush the toilet when the power is out? We use buckets - but is there a better way?

I just had to ask...
No, buckets work. But try telling that to a freaking-out twentysomething intern who is calling you to ask if she can work early/late because the toilets in her house don't work with the power out...

I liked this article.. this year our garden is more to help our grocery bill rather than just enjoy growing things, and learning to grow things.. with my getting a job we are not as heavily relying on our garden but we are learning.. and have a monitary back up so to say..

We are going to try canning too.. LOL ..

I think its best for people new to gardening to start with a few easy things, a few simple tools and go from there. 3 years ago I moved back out to the country after 10 years in town. I had not so much as a rake or shovel. My land hasnt been planted in more years than I can remember so its taken 3 years to try to get it up to par. Im waiting for my dad to spread this years chicken manure so I can get started. This year I hope to have my biggest garden ever.

Ive seen many reports of the seed companies being over run with business. Even Baker Creek sent a note that they were a week late (No big deal) with my order because they are having their busiest year yet.

I think that garden-at-church thing is a GREAT idea! We have several good gardeners at church, and it would be a great way to reach out to the community!

Gardening is a hobby that pays you back with food. How many other hobbies or entertainment pursuits can you say that about? That's one way new gardeners can justify the initial upfront expenses that exceed what they spend on fruits and veggies in the grocery store. After that, it is far cheaper to grow your own.

Don't be afraid to ask for free stuff now either. It doesn't hurt to try and save money. My fence was dirt cheap for the garden, and it was by far the most expensive thing I ended up needed. Everything else was cheap and free off of craigslist and from neighbors and family.

Thanks to BYC I was able to trade seeds to make up a huge gap... and I'm hoping to see savings already at the end of the growing season this year.

My husband has already told me how proud he was of me (as before I've had what he called the black thumb). That is worth a million dollars alone!!!

FREE stuff. You can find it everywhere! If you live in an area that you can use craigslist, check out the FREE tab. This morning I picked up 8 sheets of used lattice in good shape. Don't know right now what I'll do with it, but maybe use for green beans, trellises, whatever!

I recently got myself ducks, for eggs. They are in a pen made from FREE items, then they free range my backyard when I'm home (see my silly website!). I use the poo from the ducks for my compost and between my ducks and compost pile I get rid of all my kitchen vege scraps.

Making a conscious effort this year to go green and save money. So far, so good. I can't wait to plant tomatoes tomorrow. Don't know if I can even sleep tonight! Started them all from seed in February. Traded seeds with a friend so all free except for the few heirlooms I ordered for something different!
