I rather like the idea. I mean sure it has its downfalls but most things have at least few anyways. From a self-sufficiency homesteading enthusiast's point of view this makes my heart leap for joy. I know many people who have a fear of adding livestock to any home grown enterprise based solely on the added commitment. This provides people with a chance to test the waters and retreat should they decided it isn't for them. As a promoter for this lifestyle I often try and get people to attempt raising chickens for eggs. Most people enjoy eggs, and it acts as a gateway, enlightening them of the joys of livestock keeping. This does the same just with an even smaller commitment which is wonderful. Plus the way I see it... so long as those chicken have adequate shelter, food, and water, which is pretty much provided, their lives even in the hands of a less than adequate chicken caretaker, will probably be far better than that of a commercial laying hen.
