We inherited two enormous rhubarb plants with the house, and unlike the Canada Red rhubarb they don't have red stalks. A lady who works at a prominent and very knowledgable nursery nearby said that it is possible that the lack of colour is either because they're a different/older variety or because they are older but it shouldn't affect the taste of the rhubarb.

Whatcha think?

I've read that the red pigment doesn't add anything to the taste :idunno.

For years, my rhubarb came from Dad's backyard which has this incredible plant that just keeps producing and producing. It has only a little pigment in the stems. We divided it and replanted in the same place - eastside of the house.

The extra roots came to my place. That was about 10 years ago and those three plants are now huge, also - eastside of the greenhouse.

Just from looking around in other people's gardens, it seems that the darker the red - the smaller the plants :idunno. I could be wrong . . .

I've had good green rhubarb as well as good pink and red rhubarb, it is certainly not an 'absolute' difference, if any.

Anyhow, what mainly matters is whether yours, in particular, tastes good :) Go make dessert and tell us :)

I have both varieties. The red is much sweeter but bears about 1/3 as well as the green variety.

Just enjoy.
