I really want to extend the life of my cold season plants and protect them from high temps and insects. I have planted different kinds of lettuces, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, early and late cabbage, and chinese cabbage. Any suggestions on what you use? Last year my cabbages and lettuce fried to a crisp before they were even close to being big enough to harvest. Feel free to post some links down below!

HPQ! You are gardening. That's good news .

I know the feeling of a sudden change from spring cold to summer blast furnace! It's like we are several hundred miles to the northwest, here. There is Gulf of Alaska wind, clouds and cold. The earth shifts - it's Wild West dry desert hot! That's June/early July, usually. I just ride it out.

Here's Johnny's ... shade cloth (LINK). Seems pricey!

Everything is planted out in full sun, right now. Later, salad veggie growing migrates into the shady corner of the little veggie garden.

The sunbeams are barely able to break through the mostly pines, in the shady corner. The garden is level but a steep pine-covered hill begins just a few yards away. After about 10am, shade predominates.

It isn't 100% wonderful. Humidity still sinks to below 20% nearly every afternoon. That's tough on plants, too.

I'm trying to garden! The chickens plucked the onion sets out of the dirt so I had to replant those. I won't put the cold weather veggies in until I get something to protect them.
